Nyla’s Story
Nyla’s positive attitude and independent spirit have served her well in her 77 years. Diagnosed with Type I diabetes almost 50 years ago, Nyla has taken great care to monitor her blood sugar and eat well. Over time, she has been hospitalized four times for low blood sugar that nearly caused her death. In addition, the diabetes has reduced significantly the circulation and feeling in her legs and feet. When her right foot began to rub against her shoe, she didn’t feel the discomfort until a wound developed. Over time it grew to a couple of inches in length and so deep the bone was exposed.
She went to her family physician, who prescribed treatments for her wound, but her wound continued to get worse. She was then referred to a wound care clinic. Nyla could tell she had a very serious wound; so serious the medical staff was concerned they may have to amputate her foot. They recommended MIST Therapy be added to her wound care treatments. Nyla would visit the clinic each day during the week to have her MIST Therapy treatment and “boot therapy” to assist her circulation. During this time, she also underwent two separate procedures to place stents in her arteries to improve circulation to her legs.
After several months of treatment, Nyla was told she was going to be able to keep her foot. “That was my happy day,” said Nyla. While the process seemed slow at times, Nyla’s wound continued to improve and was completely healed about six months after MIST Therapy was started. The use of MIST Therapy helped Nyla keep her foot.
